What is the City to City Ride?

Now in it's third year, the City to City Ride is Detroit's Ride for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and consists of two parts:

1. A 20-25 mile group ride on Saturday, August 1st, beginning at Campus Martius Park in Detroit, riding to Dearborn along Michigan Avenue and the looping back to the starting point. This part of the Ride is open to all and is your chance to help make a difference in the fight against CF. 9:00 am sharp! JOIN US!   Click here to register.

2. On August 3rd beginning at Campus Martius, Emily Schaller and her core group of riders will embark on a 280-mile bike ride to Chicago. The group will follow the historic Michigan Avenue rout from Detroit, through southwestern Michigan and parts of Indiana before arriving at Chicago's Grant Park. This part of the Ride is open to select riders only. We need your support! Make a difference by becoming a sponsor. Please support the Ride with an online donation.  Click here to donate.

Support Emily on her Extroardinary trip to California For Cystic Fibrosis!

Rocking cystic fibrosis so hard that CF will one day stand for "Cure Found" is Emily Schaller's mission in life. In Septermber, 2009, Emily will take her mission on the road. Heading west from Detroit, Emily will ride her bike on a month-long Emily to Ellen for Cystic Fibrosis campaign with the hopes of ending up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Ellen DeGeneres is Emily's hero and being on The Ellen DeGeneres Show has been her dream for years. "Her show is the perfect vehicle to deliver my story," says Emily, founder of the Rock CF Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to finding a cure for CF. "I want to educate as many people as I can about cystic fibrosis and emphasize how the never ending fight of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has made it possible for me to live my life to the fullest."

Emily will ride her bike 1,400 miles from Detroit, MI to Denver, CO. The first 300 miles from Detroit to Chicago will be part of her Rock CF Foundation's City to City Ride with six other riders. From Chicago, she will head west to Denver. Because Emily and her CF doctor decided that riding through the desert is not a great idea, her modes of transportation from Denver to Burbank, California will be adventuresome. A canoe trip down the Colorado river? A donkey ride through the Grand Canyon? A moped along Route 66?

Swallowing forty pills a day, taking breathing treatments and undergoing chest physical therapy are all part of her daily routine. And because her body can't absorb nutrients normally, she expects her daily intake of 3,000 calories to almost double on the ride. Exercise has improved Emily's lung function and has allowed her to complete two half marathons in one year. Riding across the country, she hopes to shine a light on what the future holds for the cure of cystic fibrosis.

"The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has so many new treatments that will change the lives of patients with CF. We need these treatments now, and the only way we can do that is by raising funds for the CF Foundation because they are the leaders in funding this research and developing new drugs," Emily says. All proceeds from her ride will benefit the CF Foundation to move this research forward.

Donations for the ride can be made at Emily's Donation Page. Checks made to "CFF" can be mailed to: Rock CF Foundation, 2995 Bridge St., Trenton, MI 48183.

How The City to City Ride Started

Created and led by Emily Schaller and Kevin Borsay, the City To City Ride started in the summer of 2007 as a way to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cystic fibrosis. Starting in Detroit at Campus Martius Park on July 28, Emily and Kevin embarked on a 280-mile bike ride that ended in Chicago's Grant Park. They followed the historic Michigan Avenue route from the avenue's point of origin at Campus Maritius and traveled across southern Michigan with stops in the towns of Clinton, Coldwater, Union, New Buffalo and Gary, Indiana before arriving in Chicago. They had many sponsors and donors and in addition to making friends along the way, so far, they have raised more than $15,000.00 for the Rock CF Foundation.
